Last year I started this blog with the intent of maximizing the value I get out of the games I play. I generally only get a single game a week in and due to family life, I am generally unable to make it out for steamroller events where I could get multiple games in a day. By taking the time to write up a battle report for each game I played, I was able to learn lessons quickly and apply them to future games. However, writing up a battle report every week ended up getting difficult to keep up with. When I finally hit a week where I just didn't get it done, I ended up deciding to take a short break. That break has lasted for close to a year now.
During that year, I noticed that I was becoming less sharp and starting to make the same mistakes I did before starting the blog. My scenario awareness has gone down drastically and I am generally making mistakes with placement, order of activation, etc. I have been thinking about starting to write up battle reports again for a while, but ended up holding off once we started finding out about Oblivion and the theme remixes. Now that Oblivion is here, I think I am ready to start writing again.
I will not be committing to a battle report a week this time around, as that pace was what lead me to burnout and I would likely end up stopping the blog entirely. Instead, I am going to do two battle reports a month (one every other week) and hopefully get another non battle report entry posted each month. I have some ideas about what those other posts will be (interviews with people, list thoughts / ideas, maybe another narrative battle report) and I hope those things are interesting for people to read.
As a start, I am going to talk about a couple lists that I intend to play test. First up, is Asphyxious3 in Scourge of the Broken Coast.
Cryx
[Theme] Scourge of the Broken Coast
[Asphyxious 3] Asphyxious the Hellbringer [+24]
- Barathrum [15]
- Cankerworm [9]
- Kharybdis [17]
- Nightwretch [7]
Axiara Wraithblade [0(6)]
General Gerlak Slaughterborn [0(6)]
Satyxis Raider Captain [4]
Blighted Trollkin Marauders (max) [15]
- Jussika Bloodtongue [0(5)]
Satyxis Blood Witches (min) [8]
- Satyxis Blood Hag [4]
Satyxis Raiders (max) [16]
- Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]
I know that most will ask why I am not playing Lich3 in Black Industries and I do understand that doubling down on the warjack survivability is a solid plan. However, I look at Scourge and I see a theme that grants gang fighter to warjacks. I see Lich3 and I see mobility. Jacks get fast and now there are models with two inch reach to help apply gang fighter. The fact that they have unyielding once they get into melee is a bonus. Additionally, I see a unit in the satyxis raiders that loves to have ashen veil as a buff. Two units with ashen veil (marauders and raiders) can really spread that bonus across the board. If you are playing into living enemies, it can be difficult for them to find places to land where they aren't taking that -2 penalty. Then, you have Lich3's other spells and tools available as needed (hex blast, calamity, soul collection). I think it is likely that the list can be refined, but it's probably a decent starting place and I believe there is something to be found here.
The next list I put together was using Deneghra3 list in Black Industries.
Cryx
[Theme] Black Industries
[Deneghra 3] Deneghra, the Soul Weaver [+27]
- Barathrum [15]
- Deathripper [6]
- Inflictor [13]
- Malice [15]
- Slayer [10]
- Skarlock Thrall [4]
Hellslinger Phantom [0(7)]
Necrotech [0(2)]
Necrotech [0(2)]
Necrotech [0(2)]
Soul Trapper [1]
Soul Trapper [1]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Cephalyx Overlords [8]
Mechanithralls (min) [6]
- Brute Thrall (3) [0(6)]
Wraith Engine [15]
My biggest concern with Denny3 is having that huge base get shot off the board. A shield guard with carapace and a shield is a nice thing to have in the list. The mechanithralls also bring three more shield guards to the party. Granted, if you are using the brutes as shield guards you aren't ambushing, but it is nice to have that option. The Hellslinger is almost a no-brainer in this theme. Additionally, if you are bringing any real number of repairable models, the three necrotechs is a great option to have. I could respect someone who thinks I don't need Malice or Barathrum, but I think each one adds another dimension to the list. The overlords are a staple unit for clearing infantry and the wraith engine still asks a question that needs to be considered by the opponent.
I don't have much experience with Black Industries from pre-Oblivion, so I am not super comfortable with this list. I am not really used to having lower count model armies, but I think there might be potential there. There are a lot of repairable models between the jacks and battle engines and there's plenty of options for soul collection that Denny can make use of. I am interested to see how it plays out on the table, but I like the bones of the list.
With the new Oblivion themes available, I am finding that it is hard to focus on just a couple lists, so what I am playing may end up taking some time to settle. For now, I am forcing myself not to go back to Skarre3 as I want to play around with some new stuff and see what else is out there. I think Skarre3 kraken is still one of the best all around generalist lists in Cryx, but its time for me to explore what else is around. It's only a matter of time before I return to the boat, but for now she will rest. My first post-Oblivion battle report should be up soon and it will feature the Lich3 list I discussed above.
